| Label biography & historical reflecton: In 2004 I moved to Toledo, OH to take a sales & marketing job at a punk/metal/hardcore music distributor. I knew no-one outside work, had never been to Toledo prior to the interview, and generally had no idea what I was getting into. Regardless of this fact, I jumped in head first. This was one of the best decisions I ever made... but at the time it was hard. I decided I needed something creative to occupy my time and to pour my energy into. Many of my co-workers ran DIY labels of their own, so I decided to give it a try. Between their knowledge and the wealth of information I could draw upon from our exclusively distributed labels, I had all the resources I would need. That year I released a DVD-R compiling my old band's live performances that highlighted our latter/un-recorded material. This was actually Gilead Media Limited Series #1. I didn't have much of a plan for the label at that point, but that quickly changed. In 2005 I realized I had greatly enjoyed the experience of putting music out into the world in a physical format, and realized it was something I wanted to continue doing. My then current band was planning to do a split with some of our friends, so I settled on committing that as the first official Gilead Media release. Six years have passed since then, and I'm very proud of the work I've done alongside some very special bands and artists. Some may wonder about the eclectic nature of the label's output over this period of time, and rightfully so, there's been quite an odd mix of music in the Gilead Media catalog. I founded the label under the flag of "Innovative Sound Exploration & Development," and vowed to release music that I found groundbreaking & interesting, regardless of genre. This is something I enjoyed, and something that kept the job of running a DIY label a very interesting one. Sadly, this is also something that prevented solid label growth for a long time. It prevented people from really becoming a fan of Gilead Media overall, and the work I was doing as a whole. In 2010 I decided to change the model, to focus primarily on releasing heavier records. It wasn't something I was terribly happy about at the time, I never wanted to limit what the label would do. Now, after over a year has passed, I can see it was easily the right choice and I'm ultimately very pleased with where things have become. Gilead Media is not a day job, despite the long hours I put in. It's a hobby that breaks even. I do not take paychecks from the label, I reinvest every miniscule bit of profit that comes through. Thank you for your interest & support, past & future. A History Of Records: ELD040: Mutilation Rites - I Am Legion one-sided 12" w/b-side etching Released: Feb/March 2012 | Pressing: 700 180g black | Status: Unreleased | Listen: Coming soon I was first turned on to Mutilation Rites by my friend Scott. His band played with them in Minneapolis on a tour earlier in 2011 and he had nothing but great things to say. I noticed the band had been on tour frequently and another friend from Milwaukee was going to be releasing one of their demos on CS. I finally got around to checking out the band when I got a stack of the self-titled cassette form Poison Infiltration and was greatly impressed. I Am Legion contains three original demo songs re-worked and re-recorded with their current lineup, the same lineup recording their new full-length for Prosthetic Records. Artwork will be handled by RAINBATH Visual. Images: COMING SOON ELD039: FALSE - Untitled LP Released: August 2011 | Pressing: 800 180g black | Status: Available | Listen: Bandcamp I first heard about FALSE while sitting around a coffee house in Madison, WI with Bryan and Andy from Thou. They had just played Minneapolis the night prior, where FALSE opened the show, and everyone in Thou was entirely and completely blown away by how intense and relentless FALSE were live. Just going off their description & the obvious impact left upon them, I knew I had to hear FALSE immediately. A couple months later I get an email from Bryan informing me that my long-time friend Adam Tucker was in the midst of mixing & mastering the FALSE recording for release. Tucker only puts a million % into everything he's a part of, so naturally I was thrilled. I'm sitting here now and listening to his mastered tracks as I write this, and I cannot wait to unleash this record upon the world with the band and Howling Mine records. FALSE bring us the best of what abrasive and relentless black metal can be. The two songs that make this 12" are fast paced, but with a purpose, and heavy on scathing (yet decipherable) vocals. Bryan and Andy kept telling me FALSE were the most relentless black metal band they'd ever seen. When you hear this record you'll know what they mean. I grew up really into super-technical metal, I loved both Orthrelm and Behold... the Arctopus. That's not to say I think Krallice reminds me of them, despite some incredible Arctopus-ish riffage in Telluric Rings, but there is an undeniable tech-metal aspect to them. I guess that's what sets them apart, for me, from the rest of the black metal pack. I can say with certainty, and I told the band this, I think Krallice are the best band currently writing "extreme" metal. Their precision in songwriting is unrivaled, bottom line. Being able to be a part of that legacy they're creating, that's something that is very humbling for me. The vinyl edition of Diotima, much like Dimensional and the self-titled albums, features artwork that is different from the CD release. It will include a massive booklet that we're thinking is going to be glued into the gatefold, but we might come up with something else. Of course I'm sure there's going to be a million little extras and bonuses, obi strip and all that. A vinyl version of this collection will come along in 2012 as one massive, massive 3LP once we're entirely sure all of the original releases that these songs are coming from are out of print. I finally get to have a hand in releasing all the incredible Thou stuff I didn't have a hand in the first time around, wahoo! Images: COMING SOON ELD035: Barghest - Untitled LP Released: June 2011 | Pressing: 500 black 180g | Status: Available | Listen: Bandcamp I heard snippets of Barghest the first time I visited Louisiana. I had just flewn in to hang out with Thou on their trip to SXSW 2009. Andy Gibbs had played snippets of old Barghest demos for me in the van ride from the airport. I remember we visited some great little bar/grill that had incredible food. I was sleep deprived, starved (that's how I have to travel, I don't know why) and this plate of grilled vegetables I had at the restaurant was just unbelievable. Totally hit the spot. Anyway, on the way there he played me some of some of his other band at the time (I think they were still active) called We Need To Talk. All around great stuff, but Barghest stuff with me being that it was more metal and more up my alley. I bothered the band about getting me something to listen to, and they promised they would. I guess I can't really say they were lying, it just took a while! I always tell people that I've never, ever worked with a band that contacts me through email or sent me a demo. As I started brainstorming on ideas for this here discog page I realized I was being a liar. This split is a direct result of Kyle (Ash Borer) reaching out to me via email about doing a 7" for their band. At the time It wasn't something I was able to do, and, to be entirely frank, I wasn't sold on their demo material I had heard at the time. Not to say I didn't like it, I just wasn't sure if it was something I wanted to release. I try to be as critical as I can about potential projects, sometimes to a fault. I distinctly recall one early morning I was working 1st shift at the print shop, no one else was around, and I was blasting through the Fell Voices Untitled (II) LP that Howling Mine and I were planning to release together, and then decided to jam what Ash Borer material I had with me at the time. It dawned on me very suddenly that the two bands went amazingly well side by side. I stopped working on the order I was in the middle of, hopped on the computer in the shop for a "smoker" (being one of the non-smokers at work I decide I get tiny breaks to dick-off to balance the playing field a bit) and emailed Kyle explaining enthusiastically that I needed to work with them on this split that I knew was in the works. He put me in touch with Nate from Eternal Warfare, who was already committed to the project, and we decided it would be a killer team-up for a split release. These two tracks still stand as some of my favorite material by both bands. Images: [COVER] ++ [PACKAGE] ELD033: Northless - Clandestine Abuse Gatefold 2LP Released: March 2011 | Pressing: 1st - 600 Orange, 2nd - 300ish Red | Status: Available | Listen: Bandcamp Erik (founding member, vocals, guitar) and Co. were a group of lads I followed through many incarnations. I always enjoyed the band, but felt like the recordings always lacked a special something that would make the songs jump out at me. They had definitely been outstanding every time I caught Northless live, whether it was the first time as a two-piece at the Reptile Palace right here in Oshkosh, or as their first four-piece lineup at the Maritime Theater in Appleton. As a matter of fact that second time around it was safe to say that I was essentially entirely floored by their performance. Filling out the band as a four-piece really brought together the sound of the band and added a huge dynamic that I believe took their songs to a new level live. It was more or less at that point which I decided I had to work with them on a future release. Shortly after that show I emailed Cory at Halo Of Flies to see what the plan was for the new Northless album. He and the band kept me posted over time and thankfully "Clandestine Abuse" came along at the perfect point so that I could get involved and help deliver a crushing record alongside a group of fellow Wisconsin folks that I've grown to enjoy the company of. I've been waiting for the chance to work with Cory, whom I think runs one of the best metal/hardcore labels going right now, and whom I generally have a high opinion of as a person. To top it off, hs band, Protestant, is excellent. The layout for this was also handled by my now old friend Paul Jeffrey, and I don't think the band, Cory at Halo Of Flies or myself could be happier with the outcome. The record release show for "Clandestine Abuse" is going to be March 8th, alongside Protestant and Thou at the Borg Ward in Milwaukee. I really don't see how there could be a better show the rest of the year. Let me just start with that. I believe the first time I heard about them was through Bryan Funck. I honestly can't really recall how it cames up. I think it may have been that he was releasing this record, and mentioned it in passing while we talked label shop. After time he came to me and asked if I'd like to have part. Up until this point I hadn't really done much in the way of black metal. Yea there was that Leech split and the Krallice records, but I felt like Fell Voices was something different than both of those bands. I felt like they created this atmosphere, it's hard to put into words, but it's something I never really felt listening to music before. It really took me somewhere in my mind. I decided at that point that it was worth taking the chance on a record that was sort of breaking new ground for the label. And am I ever glad I did. There may be a lot of albums that indicate certain turning points for the label in very different ways, such as how Thou and Krallice more or less saved Gilead Media from dissolution and liquidation, or how releasing the Appleseed Cast and mewithoutYou stuff early on was a huge achievement for me personally... but with Fell Voices, it helped me to realize a new direction for the label. Something that feels like coming home. It's true. My mouth was agape, and I couldn't believe that the band I had been working with since late 2007 had developed so quickly and become so incredibly focused. As more rough versions of the songs comprising Summit came my way I grew more and more convinced that Thou had, somehow, hit a whole new level in their songwriting. There had never been a record or song of theirs that I didn't enjoy on some level or another, but this was something else entirely, a whole new realm. There was also never a point in time where I ever expected to release this record. So when I gave Bryan feedback on what I had heard I could confidently tell him that it was one of the best records I had heard in the last decade, without the risk of trying to hype my own label-ego. Then, I suddenly got an email from Bryan while I was on my way through California on a work-related field trip. The subject was "Summit CD" and the body simply said "Will you put that out?" I think I had a minor heart attack first, then furiously responded "A million times YES!" From there it was a crazy, long road to getting the album released. There were a bunch of really irritating issues with the mixes, I think it had to be remixed twice? Which was a headache considering the recording engineer/mixer was on tour in Europe without the abillity to remix/fix the original mix issues. This also meant it had to be mastered twice, since we didn't catch the original mix issues until they came to the forefront in mastering. These delays are what caused the band and I to decide to do a tour edition of the CD. That tour version was pressed on professionally replicated CD-Rs using the rejected mix that we didn't want to use for the full release. But it was cool putting together the package for that tour edition (see blog post here) and everything with the finished version of the official release ended up being spectacular, and exactly what we wanted. Also, I don't think we had any typos. The amount of positive response that has come in for this record was really inspiring to me as far as the label goes, especially since it came at a time when I was questioning if I wanted to carry on any longer. I guess there's really no other way to put it. I was never really into punk in any form at all, so the fact that I thoroughly enjoyed this band threw me for a loop. I wasn't sure if it was just a case of me being proud of folks from Wisconsin doing something good, or if this band really did have something special going on. I knew they had a bit of a following due to their 7" release via Dead Format, but I wasn't sure if that really translated to a fanbase outside the group of regulars that visit the DF website. Right around Halloween 2009 I took the songs to my friend, and personal authority on all things punk, John Pata to get his feelings. I explained that I was looking to release the EP as a CD, and wanted his thoughts. John enthusiastically confirmed all of my feelings, and thus this record came to be. The band and I originally planned to have this released in time for them to take copies on a Japanese tour. Well, I guess the tour aspect fell apart, which was a huge bummer, but I'm still glad to have this CD in my catalog of releases, and I still love these songs endlessly. Images: [COVER] ++ [CD PACKAGE] ELD029: Get Rad - I Can Always Live gatefold LP/CD Released: January/February 2010 | Pressing: 1000 CDs, 600 LPs (200 black, 400 clear) | Status: Both available | Listen: Bandcamp I almost died the day I got a call from Dave (Rudnik, bass) asking if I was interested in working with Get Rad to release their new record. We were driving through Milwaukee, coincidentally, in a busy part of town, during crazy traffic and I was busy daydreaming about the voicemail I had just listened to. Dave was a big part of the Milwaukee punk/hardcore scene as I was getting into hardcore. He sang for a band called Seven Days of Samsara that I adored and I distinctly recall them being a band that had a profound effect on me early on. From the inception of this label I had always wanted to work with Dave to release something for one of his bands. Get Rad had always been high on the list for me, as Kevin (vocals) stayed at my apartment while Since By Man was through town while I lived in Toledo, and he was a super nice guy. Well, he actually stayed in the van to ensure it wouldn't be stolen/broken into while everyone else slept in the house. And at some point Ben (drums) stayed at that same Toledo apt while passing through town for a show with some other dudes I knew. Eventually I met Brad (guitar) and realized that everyone in this band is a righteous person. Really there wasn't a decision to be made, it was more a case of figuring out logistics. Eventually we figured out I'd be co-releasing the record with Pat from Hyperrealist, which sat just fine with me. Pat and I had built a strong friendship in 2008 when we shared a table/hotel room out at Dude Fest in Indianapolis. Thanksgiving weekend, just a couple months before this record came out, I saw Get Rad play a packed show at the Borg Ward in Milwaukee. That show simply blew me away. There was such great energy and a positive vibe. It made me feel excited about hardcore again. I'll never forget that. A story becoming more and more common, I suppose. I'm glad they did, though, because I love this album and was really bummed out at the idea of not being able to work with Krallice again. The artwork took substantially longer this time around due to the fact that the artist had to entirely create new art by hand. I'm glad she took the time to do it, because the gatefold layout is really striking and has a different feel from the CD because of it. I recall having a long phone call with Nicholas McMaster (bass, vocals) about getting all the art ready to send over to me so I could get cracking on the layout. I was hanging out at Amoeba in Hollywood, had a huge armful of records, and was poking around the experimental music and soundtrack LPs. It was a bad time for a call, but I was happy to talk to Nick about the art. On that same trip to Amoeba I also saw a kid wearing a Thou shirt... that was weird. I talked to him about Thou, because I'm a nerd. I believe Kreation was supposed to work on this record, but for some reason backed out. I can't recall the details anymore. But hey, it's now probably my favorite split release that I've done thus far, so it worked out for me! This split was originally supposed to have a locked groove on each side of some natury/watery sounds. A cavernous dripping noise and something else. I found some really great samples, but when the lacquers were cut they were cut way too loud. The bands and I rejected them and the bands decided to nix the samples and cut it straight. There are some rejected test pressings floating around out there, 6-8 copies maybe, that have those locked groove samples. If they were cut quieter and the samples were clearer it probbaly could've worked, oh well. It was a real pleasure to work with Vendetta Records to do this record. I loved doing the layouts for our repsective versions and I hope I get to work with Stefan again someday on a project. In addition, communicating with Paul from Leech was a great experience as well. Oh crap, that reminds me. The main reason I decided to even go through writing stories about every release I've done! Although now this story won't possibly meet the expectations set forth by such a statement, but here we go anyway. Paul sent me the audio master for their side of the split. Of course, it was on a cassette, which I should've expected. But it was in an envelope alongside a branch of a tree from the Pacific northwest region where Leech is from, a letter typed on a photograph of a grey grim sky using a typewriter, and the entire package was sealed with a wax seal. I couldn't believe the efforts that went into preparing this parcel, and I loved it. There were a lot of problems with the audio masters for this record now that I really think of it. Because if I recall correctly that very same audio tape was running slow, so the Leech material was all wonky and just wasn't going to work. Delays galore in almost every step of this release, but it ended up being a magnificent record in the end. To top it off we are now working on a final pressing of picture disc copies to use up the remainder of the jackets I have on hand! Being a fan of both bands I agreed enthusiastically. Let me just say this. From the standpoint of doing a really insane 10" record, this was an extremely fun and wacky release to do. From a financial standpoint it was a completely foolish idea. Honeslty it's probably something where I should've talked the bands into doing something a little less extravagant and costly, but I was really excited to do something so over the top and ridiculous. Sometime in the future, hopefully 2011, I'm going to repackage this in a screen printed jacket and sell them off in a fairly inexpensive manner (compared to the original price of the calendar). Images: [COVER] ++ [BLUE VINYL] ++ [PINK VINYL] ELD025: Thou/Black September - Thrive & Decay split 7" Released: October 13, 2009 | Pressing: 1000 clear red | Status: Out Of Print | Listen: Bandcamp When Bryan asked me to work on the repress for this record I agreed with no questions asked. It was originally released by Shaman Records, KNVBI Records, Buriedinhell Records, Injustice Of Humanity, Halo of Flies and One Eye Records and Bryan was looking to give the album a complete and total makeover for the repress. The proper, full and complete version of Smoke Pigs is included on this version, to my pleasure. I hand printed all of the posters for this beast right around the same time I printed the posters for the Leech split, and when taking them in to be cut with a hydraulic cutter I was somewhat worried I would get some flack from the print shop employee. To my relief the guy didn't really give much of a crap at all. If there's one thing I hate, it's awkward, uncomfortable or otherwise anxiety inducing human interaction. Which, with me, is probably more common than it should be. Bryan then asked if I would print some additional copies of the poster so that he could send them out to folks who picked up the original pressing of this split, since he intended to include the poster there and was unable to for some reason. This time around, upon taking them in to be cut, there was a different employee working. He was an older man, so I handed him the stack of prints and he took them to the cutter to get things underway. He then stopped me as I proceeded to leave and run errands while he cut them, and asked me to list my name, phone number and address for him on some random scrap of paper. I promptly declined to give him any information at all and proceeded to explain how I never had to fill anything out before. He tried to strongarm me into writing down the information again. I simply said "I'm not giving you anything, I'll be back in 15 minutes to pick them up." I then turned around and left. Upon pickup I paid with cash and didn't say more than Thanks and bye. I felt like a badass considering I never really get aggressive with strangers, but it was really uncomfortable... an awkward day. Before I knew Dave was in the band we stumbled upon a topic that invoked much rage in both our hearts... partially-hydrogenated oils. Black Arrows was set to play our show in Indianapolis and my pal John Zeps had given me a heads about as to how absolutely crushing they were. I don't think I have ever seen a band play such an absolutely intense set in a living room in my life. On top of that I felt like everyone at that show, and hosting it, were some of the most polite and just all around great people I had met in a long time. I was totally and entirely smitten with the environment we encountered in Indianapolis. That night we slept on couches in the very living room where all the bands had played, and it was hard to sleep in a room that had so recently been filled with such an unbelievable amount of energy. The following morning I had to leave early for the solo four hour drive home to Toledo from Indianapolis and I was left day dreaming (or maybe real dreaming, I don't know, it was a tiring drive after a tiring weekend) about the brutality I had witnessed the night before. Further on down the road John Zeps sent me the Black Arrows demo, which received heavy rotation in all of my media devices. Soon thereafter my good friend Cody Kirkendall started a label called Arclight Communications that released some great music in it's short period of activity. At some point he was locked in to release this album on CD, but as the label fell by the wayside so did this release. A couple years later I ran into Dave Britt at my first Dude Fest. We chatted, reminisced about our bonding rage over partially-hydrogenated oils, and briefly decided that it would be a good idea for us to work together to finally release this record. Every part of me wishes the band could dedicated more time to touring and promoting themselves. I don't know what holds them back from becoming a force in heavy music, because this record has always blown me away. Also, when I posted about updating this on Facebook: Brian Eichmann: i vote that for the black arrows story you write "because it's fucking awesome. the end." Based on our work together on the Indricothere LP+CD he thought I would be a good label to work with on this vinyl project. I didn't quite know what to expect of it, after hearing some vague descriptions of the band's style from various online press outlets. But Mick Barr sent me a download for the album and I was at once blown away by the record as a whole. Despite this I was again faced with the dilemme of whether or not it was something I would do well to release. I decided that my love for the record, and my love for the bands ability to combine so many elements to make something entirely new I'd never heard before, should trump any apprehension I had about releasing something in a genre that would be relatively new ground for Gilead Media. I think that, at this point, it's safe to say that releasing this record has helped shape the label into more of what it is today, and helped me eventually make the jump to focus primarily on metal-oriented releases. Frodus was a band that challenged my ideas of music and I wasn't quite sure how to feel about it. Ultimately I realized the brilliance of the FCI album, and subsequently back-tracked through their older records, and became eternally bummed when "Weapons" was released and was more or less their final full-length. Fast forward to late 2008. I couldn't stop my mind from racing, thinking of ideas of stuff to try and get the rights to repress. When I cut down the list FCI was the obvious choice. It was easy to secure the licensing deal for this one thanks to my history working with Tooth & Nail on the mewithoutYou LPs. From there I reached out to Shelby Cinca, guitarist/vocalist/conceptual guy behind all things Frodus, to see how he would feel about the re-release of their legendary LP. Let me just say this, I've yet to work with someone who gets more genuinely excited about releasing a record than Shelby Cinca. What an inspiring person to work with. In addition to that, he is a killer designer. I went back on forth for a long time on whether or not to do a single LP or 2LP for this. Despite the fact that this 2LP reissue was absurdly expensive, I feel like it deserved it, and I'm glad we went the extra length to make it something special, to give it the vinyl treatment it deserved. The 45 RPM master of this really hits hard, and I couldn't have been happier when I heard the test pressings for the first time. I think the only thing we couldn't accomodate out of all the ideas Shelby had, was to print the lyric sheet inserts on a dot matrix printer. Man, I wish we could've tracked one down. I wonder if anyone sent in their signed "contract" to be countersigned and returned by the FCI corporate suits. I need to ask Shelby about that. It features the last two songs from the "Tyrant" CD that did not appear on any of the vinyl editions of "Tyrant." I think this might be the record I've done that has more bonus goodies included with the least amount of music. Despite that, it all has some of my favorite artwork for the Thou records I've done, and the images Bryan selected for the patch, poster and insert are all just fantastic. I know for certain that at least one person out there has the "Animal Liberation, Human Annihilation" tattoo. I know the band took that from somewhere else, but the dude got it tattooed because of this record, and that's awesome to me. With the insert, displaying rabbits hanging and gutting hunters and their hunting dogs, I like to think that Bryan selected that because of my obvious love for lagamorphs and my efforts to educate people about the need of good homes for domestic rabbits in shelters and rescues across the United States. Whether or not it's true that he had me in mind when selecting that image, I don't know... but I'll go on living in ignorance so I feel cool. "The Farmer's Almanac" was a title I came up with when I approached Travis and Adam Tucker about doing this comprehensive discography type collection of their recorded material. I'm glad they liked it and decided to run with it when we moved forward with the project. I wish this record could've seen a physical release, but by the time we got around to releasing it there just wasn't demand for Uncle Bob material on CD, or vinyl. I must give copious amounts of credit to Andy Helgeson for pumping out this killer cover art. It really captures the feel of the story from UBDAC's "Episode III: The Journey Begins." Good work, old friend. Originally I sold downloads of this through my online store when I used some open source software as the backbone for my store. I left that fall by the wayside when the site I was using to host the downloadable content disappeared. I suppose I could get it going again, but it can be purchased on itunes and all that, so if people want it they can go there or steal it, I suppose. In addition to that, his old band Waxwing was in constant rotation when I worked at a record store years ago. I remember when Burning My Travels Clean was released, I don't think there was much else I listened to for quite some time. I had originally contacted Rocky directly about re-pressing this on CD and vinyl a few years before Second Nature gave the CD a repress. At that time he wasn't interested in re-releasing his older recordings. I'm glad Dan at Second Nature got him to change his mind, and I'm even more glad that they included Gilead Media for the vinyl version of this classic Rocky V songs. Another artist on the list of musicians I've loved for years and never dreamed I'd ever work with when I started the label. Sleepwalk Powder stands as one of my favorite Mouth of the Architect songs to this very day. Design Paul Jeffrey states that this is how he had originally intended for the CD layout to look, but didn't have time to execute it the way he had wished. I was glad to give him the extra time to work up the LP layout however he wanted, and ultimately I'm quite pleased with how it looks. Except for that awful type on the back in the tracklisting, makes me cringe every time I think about this record. I'm good at proofreading apparently. Images: [COVER] ++ [COLOR VINYL] GLM017: Heller Mason - Hurry Up And Wait limited edition CD-R Released: November 2008 | Pressing: 50 hand-made copies, I think? | Status: Out of print This was supposed to be available digitally alongside the 50 or so hand-made editions, but some factors prevented that from happening. This collection is 22 tracks of out-takes, alternate versions and various other rarities not available on prior Heller Mason recordings. A lot of fun stuff in here. Thanks to Todd for putting my logo on these with effectively no effort on my behalf. It's no secret that I'm a huge dork for Thou, anyone who looks at my catalog of releases can tell, I've done more records for them than any other band. Andy Low from Robotic Empire first hit me up about Thou in late 2007, hinting I should check them out and consider working with them since his schedule was full at the time. I was immediately and thoroughly floored by their debut full-length recordings. What an unbelievable first offering. I emailed Bryan Funck as fast as I possibly could, as though the extra five minutes I may take would result in a lost opportunity to work with one of the best new bands I'd heard in a LONG time. Well, despite my inquiry to release some vinyl, we settled on working together to release the Tyrant CD. Good job to Bryan and I for missing the awesome type in the gatefold of the first pressing. So it goes. The second pressing saw the spelling error fixed and the booklet updated. Oh crap, that reminds me. The first pressing also had problems with the CD booklets. Whatever amature hacks the CD broker were using to print the booklets thought it would be a great idea to run these on old re-purposed overrun/waste stock. Yup, that's exactly what it sounds like. There were definitely a large number of booklets where you could read MERLE HAGGARD through, what was supposed to be, solid black panels of print. In addition to that, you could see CUT marks on the finished booklets. Really? Good job, printers. You failures. The broker re-ran the job and everything ended up OK, I guess. My blood pressure just went up thinking about how irritating this all was. Oh yea, the black coverage was AWFUL on the first run, too. I need some tea now, brb. OK, that's better. The second run of print was all handled by Stoughton printing (who make those nifty heavy-duty gatefold jackets), and turned out perfectly excellent. His old cd-r/cs label, The Sacrosanct Opuscule, originally did a very limited/handmade version of this on CD and It knocked me entirely on my ass. Indricothere, for those who don't know, is Colin Marston of Krallice, Behold the Arctopus, Dysrhythmia, Gorguts, etc etc, and these are his recordings done during college. He plays all guitar tracks and programmed the drums. Brutal stuff. I can't really believe how fast I sold through these, when I think about it. I should probably talk to Colin about doing a proper CD pressing at some point. As a matter of fact, as I'm writing this, I had to put this on. I can't think about this record without immediately being hit with a huge urge to listen to it. On the cover art: I'm pretty sure Chris Sommer (who designed the entire layout) painstakingly colored every single cube of color invidividually. Brutal. Thanks for turning me on to one of my favorite records, Chris! I had seen his old band The French New Wave play numerous times around Oshkosh, and when he started playing solo jams I really fell in love with his songs. I wish Todd had more time and energy to dedicate to taking Heller Mason on the road on some more extensive tours, I feel like people would really enjoy the live performances of his songs. There's something special about the way Todd plays live, full of energy and life, despite how chill his songs are. It's something special, I think. I love the artwork on this album and it bums me out that more people weren't open to checking it out or reviewing it when it was released. Not even so much because I have stock sitting around, but moreso because I just really believe it's a great collection of honest songs. When the eco-paks were originally printed the Gilead Media logo on the back was set inside a white box instead of having a transparent background to blend in with the layout. This caused much rage in my heart. Thankfully the plant fixed the problem quickly without additional charges (of course), but there was a period of time where I wanted to wreck stuff. I had loved Dakota/Dakota from day one (sucker for proggy stuff), and when Justin Wexler at Forge Again came up with the idea to release this to take advantage of the United Record Pressing 100 LP sale I figured why not?! Justin is a great guy, and I was stoked for the chance to work on an release with him. I essentially let him take the reigns, so no great stories behind this one. I was really stoked on how everything turned out, though. So, great job, Justin! Ha! They helped put Gilead Media on the map in a big way, which is strange considering the direction I decided to ultimately take the label (more metal, less indie). My friend Chris Sommer was the first person to try and get me into mewithoutYou, unsuccesfully. Then my old metalcore band played a festival with them in Iowa, and I really did not enjoy their set (AB Life era). After that my friend Seth Hendrickson got into them, and I still just couldn't dig it when he'd play it while we hung out. It wasn't until a few years later, while working for the music distributor in Toledo, that I heard Catch For Us The Foxes. I couldn't believe how much I loved these songs, and could hardly believe it was the same band. I bought the CD that day and it was pretty much the only thing I listened to for a long time. Shortly after digesting that record I went back and picked up AB LIFE and found myself in love with that album as well. These records still stand as two of my favorites throughout my history with music, and I'm honored I was able to give them the vinyl treatment. Big thanks to Tooth & Nail for being so excellent to work with on these albums over the past couple years. I definitely couldn't believe it when I got the original email saying we had the go-ahead to enter an agreement from the folks at Tooth & Nail. I had originally done some extensive design work for the CD version of Microeconomics and at that time had inquired with HWC vocalist Ryan Durkin about the possibility of releasing the 7". He informed me that Level Plane had also expressed interest (being one of the labels that helped release the CD) so if I wanted to release it I would have to co-release it with him. We talked about it a lot, Greg Drudy and I, and when it came down to it his interest wained. I talked to Durkin and got the all-clear to go ahead and release this myself. I originally ran this through Pirates Press, but I was unhappy with the test pressings. I got real crabby and decided to scrap the project. A few months later I got the bug up my ass to try and pull this off again. I was going to send it to United to be pressed but ultimately went with Musicol. The vinyl turned out really nice, but according to Pat Mathis (Hyperrealist/dude who printed the b-side of all the records) each record hole had a little vinyl residue on it from being hole punched. This basically means he and his printing partner had to use an exacto to cut them all clean before they could be screen printed. Well, Pat's work paid off and these ended up looking fantastic. This is also the layout I've done that I'm the most proud of throughout the entire Gilead catalog. It took collecting a lot of components in order to make this happen. I had the lady at the post office stamp a large number of their red package stamps on some white paper, which I scanned in and rendered for this purpose. I also had to scan in a weathered record sleeve. I believe I used a blank white dust sleeve from a Queen "Bohemian Rhapsody" 7" for the texture. At this point Paul Jeffrey gave me some invaluable guidance on how to apply the texture to the rest of the design components. Everything turned out to be much more beautiful than I had even imagine. Thanks to all the people who helped me make this a great release. Images: [COVER] ++ [COLOR VINYL] GLM009: Minsk - The Ritual Fires Of Abandonment gatefold 2LP Released: April 2007 | Pressing: 700 Black, 300 Orange/Red solar flare | Status: Out of print I really can't remember why exactly Relapse reached out to me to offer me the rights to press this on vinyl, but I do remember being unsure as to whether or not I could really do well with this album. It was a lot different from anything else I'd released at that point (but really, not many of the records I released had been anything alike, I suppose) and they were really quite different from most any other band I'd heard before. I enjoyed them immensely, I just wasn't sure if I could do well with it as a release. Turns out I really had nothing to worry about. The artwork was adapted for vinyl by Orion Landau, the original artist for the CD version, and I was ultimately very happy with how everything turned out. There were only two minor things, and neither of which could really be helped by the artist. First, my logo looked really bad on this record's layout. Second, the metallic gold spot color print on this didn't pop very well due to the finish on the jacket. Oh well, I do love how the color vinyl looked, despite being a Pirates Press job. Oh yea, that reminds me, last record I ever did with Pirates Press right here. I remember calling Erika shortly after I released this to see about getting some quotes on future projects and the ownter straight up said to me "shame on you" for pressing outside the US. That really pissed me off considering I was consciously making the effort to move my production stateside. Eventually I did end up working eith Erika on the Get Rad LP (ELD029, co-released with Hyperrealist), and it was an overall positive experience with a great finished product. Images: [COVER] ++ [COLOR VINYL] GLM008: The Paper Chase - Cntrl Alt Delete U gatefold CDEP Released: April 2007 | Pressing: 1000 CDs | Status: Very much available | Listen:Bandcamp The Paper Chase was always a band I very much enjoyed for a variety of reasons, and when it comes down to it they definitely fit my original idea for the label, Innovative Sound Exploration and Development. They're a band that's released a multitude of records, and people either love them or hate them... no one is mediocre on The Paper Chase, it would seem. Well, apparently the people that love this band have never heard of my label, or don't buy CDs, or don't care about re-issues in super nice digipaks. Looking back at the layout job I did for this, I sort of cringe a little inside, but I still think it's an improvement over the original. If nothing else, for the cover photo, which I LOVE... have always loved, even when it was sort of buried on the old version released by Divot Records. That reminds me, my pal Seth Frank suggested I checked into reissuing this while we were in the car on the way to Madison to see mewithoutYou. At the time I was mega-amped. I should make him store all the copies I have left now. Despite the slow sales on this one, it was another opportunity to work with a band I've always truly loved, and meet the members on a basis of more than just as a fan, but as someone working on a project with them. Very cool for the music nerd in me. Images: [COVER] ++ [PACKAGE] GLM007: Mouth Of The Architect - The Ties That Blind gatefold 2LP Released: October 2006 | Pressing: 1000 2LPs | Status: Out of print This album was a very proud moment for me as a label. Not only was the presentation really something I felt stuck out and looked great, but the album was one of my favorites from the last year and the bass player from BOTCH played bass on it! How much cooler could this record possibly be? Not much, I dare say. There was nothing too exciting about this record, despite those facts. I wish we could've worked out releasing "Time & Withering" back around the time this came out. This also marks the beginning of my friendships with Paul Jeffrey and Drew Jurgens. Two great people. If there's one thing the label has done for me of the past 5 years now, it has been that I've met many fantastic people that I'm truly greatful for. A co-worker was close with the folks at Big Wheel Recreation (who currently held the rights to these recordings), and had given me some songs to jam under strict confidentiality. I was floored by the album as a whole and couldn't believe there hadn't been a release at this point considering it had been recorded so long ago. I know the band's sudden breakup made it hard for a more established label to allocate time and resources into the album, and I'm assuming the first record had a less than stellar sales history. But in my "I can do anything!" headspace of the time I decided to try and rectify the situation. After many emails between myself, Daryl Rabidoux, the Radar Recordings guys, and Big Wheel Recreation I was able to negotiate the release of the album and return of the rights back to the band, who exclusively licensed it to Gilead and Radar for release. This took a lot of time and a lot of work, and as my first split label release it was sort of a huge headache, as I managed to handle that situation in easily the most complicated manner possible. But it all worked out and fans of the band were finally able to enjoy the final testament of a great band. Oh yea, also, one time I drove to Chicago in a torrential downpour to see The Cancer Conspiracy play a late show at the Fireside Bowl after Taking Back Sunday. It was, like, three dollars to get in, or free if you were at Taking Back Sunday. There were maybe 15 people there... my aforementioned friend Chad Medrow (from the ...Of Sinking Ships story), my girlfriend at the time, and a bunch of random kids whom, I'm fairly certin, the majority of had no idea who The Cancer Conspiracy were. That was a life-changing show. He sent me the songs sometime in 2003 or 2004 (guessing) and I fell in love with them. He had picked up a CD-R of the album at a Hopesfall show. Over time I emailed Chad Waldrup and mailordered my own copy of the CD-R version. When I decided to start a label Chad Waldrup was one of the first people I contacted about releasing an album. This was the first CD release I broke even on as a label and gave me a lot of momentum to move forward on some more projects. I was working for a music distributor when I started the label and some co-workers and I were at MACROCK in Virginia representing the company and generally enjoying ourselves. Uncle Bob Drives A Combine played which blew my mind, all in all a fun weekend. Deep Elm records also happened to have a vendor table at the flea market. Being as they were one of the labels distributed by my employer I decided to introduce myself (having communicated on the phone/in person numerous times) and chat a bit. After some conversation and explaining how I was starting a label and hoping to release some vinyl it was jokingly suggested by Deep Elm that I release some Appleseed Cast records (after gushing about my love for the band). I laughed, and then before the end of the night decided that this would indeed have to happen. After months of discussion, agreements, anxiety and panic about releasing a 3LP for my first vinyl project, the record finally came to pass. I learned quite a bit about running a label from this first release. Definitely grateful for the opportunity and experience. He turned me on to his then current band, Uncle Bob Drives A Combine, and I more or less kept tabs on his musical endeavors from there on out. A Scanner Darkly started as a side-project to a dying UBDAC, originally a two piece guitar/vocals/drum machine band group. After a year, maybe more, I revisited their songs and realized they had fleshed out into what was essentially a full band. To even more of a surprise was the set of brand new recordings. On the spot I was entirely blown away by this band an the sound they had created. On top of that I was smitten by their inspiration and obsession with literature. I got in touch with Adam and immediately begged him to let me release the record. All involved were excited, and this release easily helped shape my idea of what this label would become and what innovative music could be. A lot of things went wrong, but, in the end, it was a lot of fun and an enormous learning experience. I still vividly remember trying to figure out how to create pantone layers for the disc surface art, failing miserably trying to print the jackets with ink that was drying in the screens, and finally assembling all 950 (sticker application, CD and insert insertion) when everything was straightened out. The external artwork and disc surface were designed by Ted "Fucking" Nelson of Withchildlikeeyes (look for the fun typo, if you're lucky enough to own one of these gems), and the insert collage was created by Mr. Christopher Sommer, my band-mate in Hundred Year Hex. Most of these were destroyed by my friend Scott when I gave him more or less all the copies I had left so he could salvage the cases and use them for one of his own band's releases. So it goes.
